Are there better alternatives to Upwork?

Yes. My suggestion is not to use an alternative system, and instead, find clients through relationship and authority building.
When I first started my marketing company years ago, I used a service called Guru, which was similar to Upwork. I landed several gigs and cultivated some client relationships, but it was difficult to build a book of business from this source alone.
Fast forward and I’m now a full-time freelancer (Since 2014). I don't use Upwork or services like it. Instead, I build relationships with people in my area, meet with them, blog regularly, send emails, and stay active on social media.
As a talented freelancer, we only need a handful of clients to create a sustainable income. While freelancing service websites are great for launching our careers, I’ve found relationship building to be a more powerful and long-term solution to creating and maintaining a steady income.
